Frequently Asked Questions

What is First Aid?

First aid refers to the medical attention that is administered to the injured person immediately after an injury has occurred and at the location where it occurred. It often consists of a simple one-time treatment and requires little or no training to administer.
It is usually as uncomplicated as cleaning minor cuts, scrapes, scratches; treating a minor burn; applying bandages and wound dressings and the use of non-prescription medications.

First Aid kits Why is having a First Aid Kit so important?

Accidents happen anywhere and anytime. The first response to an accident is the most important. The first aid given at the scene on an accident can improve the victim’s chances of survival and a good recovery.

What should be in a First aid kit?

A well-stocked first-aid kit can help you respond effectively to common injuries and emergencies. Wall-mounted or carried, a compact commercial-grade kit is a staple for home, car or boat. First Aid Kit Products recommends that a Basic First Aid Kit for a family of four should include the following:

2 - Knuckle Bandages
30 - Adhesive Bandages 3/8 x 1½
50 - Adhesive Bandages 3/4 x 3

3 - Povidone Iodine Prep Pads

1 - Adhesive Tape Roll
4 - Finger Splints

1 – Tweezers
10 - Cotton Tip Applicators

These items will allow you to cope with the majority of minor injuries encountered. For a larger family or an extended stay in a remote location, we recommend a more comprehensive First Aid Kit, such as our Outdoor First Aid Kit, the Responder Kit or the “All-Ready” First Aid System.

What should a first aid box in the workplace contain?

There is no mandatory list of contents for industrial / commercial first aid kits. Deciding what to include should be based on your assessment of first aid needs.  The minimum level of first aid equipment is a suitably stocked first aid kit.
A good starting point would be the Rescue One First Aid Kit. If burns are likely to be encountered consider the Restaurant First Aid Cabinet or adding a Burn Unit to existing First aid supplies.

For traveling employees, employees who work in remote areas and those working alone must be provided with a personal first aid box.  It is also important to provide a means of summoning help, such as a mobile phone, for these employees.
If tap water is not readily available for eye irrigation, sterile water or sterile normal saline (0.9%) in sealed, disposable containers should be provided.

|What about First aid and disaster preparedness in our schools?

Employers are responsible for the provision of appropriate first aid equipment and facilities and trained first aiders in respect of their employees – this includes schools, as they are workplaces. Parents should ask their children’s schools what measures are in place to help protect the pupils in an emergency / disaster situation. Along with proper First Aid Kits and First Aid Supplies, schools should consider Classroom Lock-down Kits and 72-hour Emergency Kits.

What is a 72-hour Emergency Survival Kit?

Past disasters have shown that it may take up to 72 hours for emergency personal to reach all those effected by a major disaster situation. Everyone should be prepared to survive those first critical days without help from others.
A 72-hour Emergency / Disaster Survival Kit is a collection of survival supplies such as food, water, shelter, first aid and sanitation to sustain each member of your family, co-workers or school children for a minimum of 3 days. These items are stored in a container and are kept until they are needed.

Why should I prepare for an emergency or disaster situation?

Disasters affect hundreds of thousands of people each year. If a disaster occurs in your community, you need to be prepared to take care of yourself.
Nothing will help you and your family through any emergency situation as will being prepared for it.
Remember that it may be up to three days before Emergency Services are up and running in your area after a disaster. Having an Emergency Preparedness kit, stored high and dry, can literally be a lifesaver.
By being prepared you will be able to focus on more important tasks, you will have peace of mind and more confidence. It could be the difference between life and death.

Should I purchase an emergency / disaster kit or try to make my own?

When you purchase a commercial disaster kit you are getting proven products. These emergency survival kits contain five year shelf life food bars and packaged water. If you make your own kit, you would have to change the food and water every year or so.  Commercial supply kits also contain specialty items that you may not have, crank radios, flashlights, light sticks, toilet chemicals, waterproof matches, solar blankets to name a few. Roll and Go Survival kits and Back Pack Kits are designed for natural or man-made disasters that will require you to evacuate to a safe location. Emergency kits from First Aid Kit Products are designed for any type of emergency, including hurricanes, earthquakes and floods. For additional information, please see these First Aid and Family safety articles.

Where should I have a First Aid Kit?

First aid supplies are required for home, office, and school, sporting events, recreational activities, industrial locations, stores, restaurants and vehicles.A well-stocked first-aid kit, kept within easy reach, is a necessity in every home, office and school. You should also keep one first-aid kit in each car.
Having supplies gathered ahead of time will help you handle an emergency at a moment's notice.  Be sure to bring along a first-aid kit on family vacations and know the location of first aid kits where you work.
Store your kits in an easy-to-retrieve location that are out of the reach of young children. Children old enough to understand the purpose of the kits should know where they are stored.
